The MERV rating system (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is a standardized scale developed by ASHRAE to measure how effectively air filters reduce airborne particles of varying sizes. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particle size that it can filter.

According to leading HVAC companies, a “good” MERV rating is typically between 8 and 13. MERV 8 is common in standard filters, and is adequate at filtering basic particles like dust, pollen, textile fibers and pet dander. Locate the Filter Slot

• Common locations: return air grille (wall or ceiling), inside the furnace, or air handler unit.
• Use a flashlight if it’s tucked away or hard to see.

Remove the Old Filter

• Slide it out gently. If it’s stuck, wiggle it free. Please don’t force it.
• Clean the surrounding area with a cloth or vacuum to remove built-up dust.

Insert the New Filter

• Align the airflow arrow correctly.
• Slide it in snugly. Don’t bend or jam it. PuroAir filters, for example, are designed with a 0.25” clearance for easy fit.

Secure the Panel or Grille

• Close any access panels or grilles securely. Use a screwdriver if needed.

Restart the System

• Turn your HVAC back on and check that airflow feels normal.
