How I Finally Got Relief From Lifelong Allergies (Without Breaking the Bank)

How I Finally Got Relief From Lifelong Allergies (Without Breaking the Bank)

July 15, 2025

I have been and always will be an allergy sufferer.  Dramatic statement? Definitely.  Bold statement?  Most certainly.  True statement?  Maybe not anymore.  Let me tell you why.

I’ve suffered from seasonal allergies my whole life.  Itchy, watery eyes, scratchy throat, and sneezes that could wake the dead.  It was so bad, it influenced my decision to move from New Jersey with its grasses and pollen to the Arizona desert.  I imagined a life without allergies and plenty of sun.  Right?  Wrong.  Boy, was I wrong.  Not wrong about the sun - there’s definitely plenty of that.  But I had no idea how bad my allergies could be in such an arid climate.  It got so bad that a daily allergy pill became a part of my routine and I figured I would just have to live with the itchy throat in the middle of the night and the sneezing at all hours of the day.

But intro: PuroAir.  A friend of mine had recently purchased an air purifier for her home and had begun raving about it.  So of course, I checked them out and decided to try it out - why not?  With a 100 Day Clean Air Guarantee there was zero risk for me to see if it could somehow make a difference.  I received my PuroAir and set it up in my bedroom so I could see if it made an impact on my sleeping.  As someone who wakes up throughout the night (thanks perimenopause) I wanted to see if this could somehow improve my sleeping while also providing some relief from my allergy symptoms.  I did some browsing online of other brands two and my general takeaways were 1. brands like Molekule and Blue Air are way too expensive to “try out” although they do look cool, and 2. Some brands seemed similar but the reviews were terrible.

What I loved about PuroAir:

  • One filter that does the job for everything - pet hair, pollen, odors, even smoke!
  • Filter subscriptions - plus, they don’t try to trick you into getting them more frequently than they actually need
  • 100 Day Money Back Guarantee - no questions asked.  Some other brands offered a 30 day money back guarantee but I felt that just wasn’t enough time
  • 2 Year Warranty (plus lifetime if I stay on the filter subscription!)
  • Recent lab studies - PuroAir’s website cited specific lab research done on allergens, sleep studies, and allergy improvements!
  • Amazing customer reviews!  Not only did they have a ton of reviews, but they all seemed to be from real customers with real feedback.  And even when something went wrong, people were raving about the customer service.  You can’t top that!

I placed my order and in just a couple days, my PuroAir arrived at my door.  The purifier was pretty simple overall - it has a few timer options, several fan modes including a sleep mode, low, and high, child lock , air quality sensor, and a filter replacement light.  Pretty much everything you need, nothing more.

After unpackaging it, I decided to set it up on sleep mode, since after all it was in my bedroom.  My bedroom is about 100 sq ft, so frankly the unit more than big enough to handle the area, but with luxury vinyl tile and a dog, I figured more was better than less.

Throughout the first few days, it was so quiet I literally checked it a dozen times to make sure it was still on.  It was, and it was running normally and quieter than I expected.  After a few days of running it in sleep mode, I decided to kick it up a notch - I set it on auto mode to see the difference.  I got a good laugh as I was making my bed and suddenly the fan kicked on high speed - seeing the dog hair my duvet had kicked up near the unit proved the air purifier had sensed something new in the air - and reminded me that I needed to vacuum.  Pretty cool.

After about two weeks using the unit, I started noticing I wasn’t waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I needed to scratch my throat out.  I was breathing easier and sleeping more soundly.  Placebo effect?  Maybe. I also decided to try not taking my daily allergy pill and I was shocked when I didn’t feel like I needed it by the end of the day.  Since then, I’ve started skipping days here or there when I know I’ll be home and not out and about in the dust outside.

The real eye-opening moment for me though was when the filter replacement alert went off.  I opened the air purifier and was shocked at how much gunk was all over the filter.  We’re talking a very gross amount of dust.  I couldn’t help but wonder - if this is everything I can see, what can’t I see that I was breathing in before.  Within a couple of days, my replacement filter arrived without me needing to remember another thing on my to-do list.  A quick switch-out of the filter and we’re back up and running!

After using the PuroAir air purifier over the last 3 months, here are my takeaways:

  • First, I am in fact sleeping better. The dull hum of the unit is so light that it actually creates a bit of white noise to sleep against.
  • Second, I figured I’d be taking a Zyrtec daily for the rest of my life and now I’m only taking about 3 a week.
  • Third - those used filters are gross. I had no idea that much stuff was flying around in my air.
  • Fourth, I needed to reach out to their customer service team when I replaced my filter because I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the filter indicator light - they were beyond helpful. It’s rare to find such helpful customer service teams these days.
  • Lastly, I’m planning on adding a couple more air purifiers to my house - its an investment in my health and the daily cost of each filter is so low, its worth it.  Plus, as long as I have the filter subscription, these purifiers are good for life.  Low risk - high reward.

Even with all of this goodness, no product is perfect.  I would love an app - it would be amazing to be able to see how much time I have left and any insight on the actual air quality in my home.  Plus, since I loved the sleep mode, but I like the extra cleaning power of high mode - I’d love to be able to have it on high during the day and on sleep mode at night without having to think about it.  I also would love to be able to choose the color.  I noticed dust shows really easily on the black unit, so with each filter change I end up using a dust cloth to clean off the unit.  Otherwise, it begins looking a bit like a Chia pet.

When all is said and done, I am recommending PuroAir to my family and friends.  Why?  It doesn’t break the bank in cost, and it does what it's supposed to do. The proof is visible - it cleans the air.  It has enough bells and whistles that I feel like I have control but it also is just a set-it-and-forget-it tool to help me live a healthier life.
